Selection Procedure
The detailed selection procedure has been mentioned in the official notification of NCL Trainee Recruitment 2026. But we are giving you here the short summary of the selection procedure. The candidates are advised to refer to official notification for selection procedure.
Selection Procedure:
- Computer Based Test (CBT): All eligible candidates will appear for a CBT of 100 marks, 90 minutes duration (one sitting).
- For HEMM Operator (Trainee): Common CBT paper for all HEMM posts with 100 MCQs (1 mark each). No negative marking. Bilingual (English & Hindi).
- For Paramedical Staff & Overseer (Civil): Separate CBT for each post comprising two sections: Section A – Technical Knowledge (70 MCQs, 70 marks) and Section B – General Knowledge, General Awareness, Reasoning, Verbal & Mental Ability, Quantitative Aptitude (30 MCQs, 30 marks). No negative marking. Bilingual (English & Hindi).
- Minimum Qualifying Marks (Cut-Off): UR/EWS – 50 marks out of 100; SC/ST/ESM/OBC-NCL/PwBD – 40 marks out of 100.
- Tie-Breaking (HEMM Posts): (i) Higher percentage in Matriculation; (ii) Older date of birth; (iii) Alphabetical order of name as in Matriculation certificate.
- Tie-Breaking (Paramedical Posts except Jr. Technician ECG): (i) Higher score in Section-A; (ii) Older date of birth; (iii) Alphabetical order of name.
- Tie-Breaking (Jr. Technician ECG): (i) Graduation qualification preferred; (ii) Higher score in Section-A; (iii) Older date of birth; (iv) Alphabetical order of name.
- Tie-Breaking (Overseer Civil): (i) Higher score in Section-A; (ii) Older date of birth; (iii) Alphabetical order of name.
- Document Scrutiny/Verification: Candidates scoring at or above minimum qualifying marks will be called for verification of original documents in order of merit.

- Medical Examination: Final appointment subject to medical fitness as per CIL Medical Attendance Rules.
- Score Normalization: If CBT is conducted in multiple shifts, normalization formula will be applied: Xn = (S2/S1)*(X-Xav) + Yav.

- One Post Per Candidate: A candidate can apply for only ONE post. Multiple applications will result in cancellation of candidature.
- Minimum Marks in Matriculation (HEMM Posts): General/EWS – 55%; OBC-NCL – 50%; SC/ST – 45%.
- Valid HMV/Transport License: Must be valid as on Cut-Off Date (01.05.2026). Learning license not accepted. Candidates with pending renewal can apply but must produce valid license at document scrutiny.
- Distance Learning Qualifications: Minimum/essential qualifications acquired through distance learning/part-time or equivalent shall NOT be considered.
- Qualifications for Overseer (Civil): Must be recognized by AICTE/UGC/appropriate Indian Statutory Authorities.
- SC/ST Travel Allowance: SC/ST candidates called for CBT will be paid up to 2nd Class Non-AC fare as per rules, subject to submission of TA claim with required documents to the invigilator after the CBT.
- No TA/DA for Document Verification: No travel allowance will be paid for appearing in scrutiny/verification of certificates.
- Reservation: SC/ST/OBC(NCL)/EWS/PwBD/ESM reservations as per Government of India rules. PwBD reservation is horizontal. HEMM Operator and Jr. Technician (ECG) posts are NOT in the identified list for PwBD candidates.
- EWS Certificate: Must be based on gross annual income of Financial Year 2025-2026, valid for FY 2026-2027.
- Ex-Servicemen: Age relaxation = actual period of service in defence + 3 years (cumulative with SC/ST/OBC relaxation subject to maximum age of 50 years).
- Departmental Candidates (CIL/Subsidiaries): No upper age limit. Fee exempted.
