Selection Procedure
The detailed selection procedure has been mentioned in the official notification of IAF AFCAT 02 2026 Notification. But we are giving you here the short summary of the selection procedure. The candidates are advised to refer to official notification for selection procedure.
Selection Procedure:
- Stage 1 – Online AFCAT Written Examination: Conducted on 08 August 2026 (Saturday). Objective type, 100 questions, 300 marks, 2 hours duration. Subjects: General Awareness, Verbal Ability in English, Numerical Ability, Reasoning and Military Aptitude Test. Marking: +3 for correct, -1 for incorrect. NCC Special Entry and GATE Score Entry candidates are exempted from this exam.
- Stage 2 – Air Force Selection Board (AFSB) Testing:
- Stage I: Officer Intelligence Rating Test + Picture Perception and Discussion Test (screening test on Day 1). Document verification for eligibility.
- Stage II: Psychological Test (Day 1 Evening), Group Tests and Personal Interview (over next 5 days).
- For Flying Branch: Computerised Pilot Selection System (CPSS) – administered to recommended candidates only; once-in-a-lifetime test.
- Stage 3 – Medical Examination: Candidates recommended by AFSB undergo medical examination at designated Air Force medical establishments as per prescribed standards.
- Final Merit List: Based on combined marks in Written Examination and AFSB tests, subject to medical fitness and branch vacancies. 10% vacancies reserved for NCC Air Wing Senior Division ‘C’ certificate holders in Ground Duty branches. Two seats reserved for Law qualified candidates in Ground Duty (Non-Technical) branches.

- Verify Mobile Number and Email ID using the OTPs received, and submit the CAPTCHA.
- Agree to terms and conditions, re-verify entered values, and click ‘Submit’ to receive Application Sequence Number (User ID) and Password.
- Log in using the provided User ID and Password, then click ‘Go To Application’.
- Fill in Personal Details, Communication Details, Qualification & Experience Details, Course Preference, and Additional Details.
- Upload scanned Photograph (100KB–200KB, JPG/JPEG), Signature (80KB–150KB, JPG/JPEG), and Thumb Impression (50KB–100KB, JPG/JPEG).
- Capture Live Image via device camera.
- Review all details carefully in the Preview tab before final submission.

Other Important Information:
- Type of Commission: Permanent Commission (PC) for Men & Women – service till superannuation. Short Service Commission (SSC) – Flying Branch: 14 years; Ground Duty: 10 years (extendable by 4 years). SSC officers are not entitled to pension.
- Nationality: Indian citizens only (as per Indian Citizenship Act, 1955).
- Marital Status: Candidates must be unmarried at the time of course commencement; marriage not permitted during training.
- Aadhaar Card: Mandatory for online registration.
- NCC Special Entry: Candidates must hold NCC Air Wing Senior Division ‘C’ certificate acquired within two years from AFCAT registration date. Written exam is exempted; directly called for AFSB.
- GATE Score Entry: GATE score must be obtained within last 3 years from course commencement date. AFCAT exam exempted; directly called for AFSB. Eligible GATE subjects for AE(M): Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Production & Industrial Engineering, Engineering Sciences, Metallurgical Engineering. For AE(L): CS & IT, Data Science & AI, ECE, Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering.
- Physical Fitness (for AFSB): Candidates should be able to run 1 mile (1.6 km) in 10 minutes, do 10 push-ups and 3 chin-ups.
- Height Requirements: Ground Duty – Male: 157 cm, Female: 152 cm. Flying Duty (Pilots/FTE/WSO Su-30 MKI): 162 cm; Other aircrew: 157 cm. Relaxations for Lakshadweep (-2 cm) and North-Eastern/hilly regions (-5 cm).
- Tattoo Policy: Permanent tattoos permitted only on inner forearm (elbow to wrist) and back/dorsal side of hands. Tribal community candidates with traditional tattoos may apply with requisite certificates.
- Insurance: Rs. 1.25 Crore insurance cover (on contribution) for death while in service. Post-retirement cover under AVIC.
- Training Duration: Flying and Ground Duty (Technical): ~62 weeks; Ground Duty (Non-Technical): ~50 weeks, commencing first week of July 2027.
- Travel Allowance: AC-III Tier/AC Chair Car or actual bus fare reimbursed for first-time AFSB appearance. Candidates must carry original railway/bus tickets.

- Narcotics/Alcohol: Use/possession of narcotics is banned; candidates may be tested. Alcohol Dependence Syndrome leads to termination.
